Rally computer

A rally computer measures distance and time and shows you all the time whether you are ahead of or behind the set average.
A rally computer is a device that compares distance driven with time elapsed and shows you all the time whether you are ahead of or behind the set average speed. It takes a lot of the maths off the co-driver.
What a rally computer does
- Measures distance, either with a wheel sensor like a Tripmaster or by GPS.
- Works out target time and target distance from the average speed.
- Shows the time deviation in seconds or metres.
- Runs through several sections with average speed changes one after another.
Different types
There are fixed units with a sensor on the car and solutions on a smartphone. Fixed systems work without GPS signal but have to be calibrated. GPS solutions are quick to set up but need a clear view of the sky.
Rally Co-Pilot is that kind of solution for the iPhone. The app compares your GPS distance with the target and shows the deviation live. For more precision you can pair a RaceBox receiver with 25 position updates per second.
Allowed or not
Not every event allows every aid. Some classes are meant for stopwatch and average speed table only. Always check the regulations. Our guide to app or Tripmaster compares the options.
