Navigation rally
Also: Orientation rally, Navigational rally
A rally that mainly tests finding the correct route using sketches, symbols and maps.
A navigation rally is a rally where finding the route is the main task. The course is not simply described. You have to work it out from sketches, symbols or maps.
Typical tasks
Organisers use several formats, often mixed within one event:
- Chinese signs, small line drawings of each junction
- Herringbone diagrams, a single line with side branches
- Map tasks, where you follow a route drawn on a map
Along the way there are controls where you get a stamp or an entry on your time card. If a control is missing from your card, the organisers know you went the wrong way.
Difference from a regularity rally
In a pure navigation rally, what counts most is whether you drove the correct route. Time usually plays a minor role, for example through a maximum time per section. Many classic rallies combine both: navigation tasks on the road with regularity tests in between.
Tip
The co-driver carries most of the load here. Read every instruction twice and count junctions out loud.
