Regularity test

Also: Regularity section, Regularity stage, RT

A scored section where you drive a set distance at a given average speed. Every deviation from the target time costs points.

A regularity test is a scored section of a rally. You drive a set distance at a given average speed and aim to pass every timing point at exactly the right moment.

Two basic forms

  • Timed run: you know the start, the finish and the target time. Timing happens only at the finish.
  • Average speed run: you hold one average over the whole distance. Along the way there are secret checks whose position you do not know.

Many tests take place on circuits, car parks or closed roads. Others run on normal public roads.

Worked example

The test is 4.5 km long and the set average is 36 km/h. At 36 km/h you need 100 seconds per kilometre. For 4.5 km that is 450 seconds, or 7:30 minutes. If you arrive at 7:31.2, you are 1.2 seconds out.

Scoring

Depending on the regulations, penalties are given per tenth or per hundredth of a second. Timing uses a light barrier, pressure hose or GPS. The guide to timing methods explains how to take your own times.
