Rally Co-Pilot

Co-driver

Also: Navigator, Co-pilot

The co-driver navigates with the roadbook, works out the times and tells the driver to speed up or slow down.

The co-driver is the second member of the crew. In a classic car rally they are much more than a passenger: they navigate, calculate and call the times.

Main tasks

  • Navigating with the roadbook, whether tulips, Chinese signs or a map.
  • Planning times: working out target times for controls and looking after the time card.
  • In a regularity test, constantly checking whether you are ahead of or behind schedule and telling the driver clearly.
  • Running the trip meter and correcting it when needed.

What makes a good co-driver

Staying calm matters more than speed. Short, clear calls help the driver more than lots of words. Many crews agree on their calls in advance, for example "two seconds early" instead of "a bit fast". When something goes wrong, getting back on the route quickly is worth more than discussing the mistake.

Tools

Stopwatches, average speed tables and a calculator used to be the basic kit. Today many co-drivers use a rally computer or an app. For working out numbers before the start, try our average speed calculator. Find more practical advice in our co-driver tips.
